Trader
Also called: day trader
Someone who buys and sells frequently, aiming to profit from short-term price movements over minutes, days or weeks.
Traders focus on price, volume, timing and news flow rather than on the long-term value of a business. Because they transact often, costs and taxes take a much larger share of their returns.
SEBI's studies of individual traders found that most lost money: about 7 in 10 individual intraday traders in the equity cash segment in 2022-23, and 93% of individual futures and options traders between 2021-22 and 2023-24.
