Wholesale Price Index
Also called: WPI, wholesale inflation
An index of the prices of goods at earlier stages of production and trade, such as raw materials, fuel and manufactured products. It leaves out most services.
Wholesale prices often react faster than consumer prices to changes in global commodity prices, so wholesale and consumer inflation can tell different stories. Companies' input costs tend to follow wholesale prices, while their customers' budgets follow consumer prices.
