Holding period
Also called: period of holding
How long an investment was owned before it was sold. Tax law uses it to decide whether a gain counts as short-term or long-term.
For many kinds of investment, gains on holdings kept longer than a period set by law are treated as long-term and taxed differently from short-term gains. The period differs between categories, such as listed shares, other funds and property, and the rules are changed from time to time, so check them with the Income Tax Department.
