Emergency fund
Also called: contingency fund, rainy day fund
Money kept safe and easy to reach for job loss, illness or urgent costs, built before investing for growth.
Its purpose is protection, not return. Without it, an emergency can force the sale of investments at a bad time. The right size depends on income security, dependants and insurance; planners often suggest several months of essential expenses.
